Director’s Desk

Prof. Neelima Asthana (Director)
Dear Students,
It is with immense pride and a deep sense of responsibility that I welcome you to Lady Irwin College — a pioneering institution of the University of Delhi, founded in 1932 with a singular vision: to empower women through knowledge, service, and societal leadership.
Our college was born in the crucible of India’s freedom movement — envisioned by educationists, reformers, and nation-builders who believed that the education of women was central to the making of a just and self-reliant society. We carry this legacy forward with unwavering commitment. For over nine decades, Lady Irwin College has not only educated women but equipped them to be shapers of change — at home, in communities, and across professional domains.
Our strength lies in our foundations. Rooted in the discipline of Home Science, our academic programmes today are multidisciplinary and deeply aligned with real-world needs — spanning Nutrition, Development Communication, Human Development, Fabric and Apparel Sciences, Resource Management, and more. These domains intersect meaningfully with public policy, health sciences, sustainable design, education, and community development.
As we enter our 93rd year, our theme “Harnessing Our Heritage for a Viksit Bharat” reflects our belief that the values of care, sustainability, scientific reasoning, and social equity — long embedded in our curriculum — are essential to building the knowledge society India aspires to be. In line with the National Education Policy, our NEP-aligned four-year undergraduate framework gives students new freedoms: to choose interdisciplinary electives, deepen research interests, and craft bespoke professional pathways.
Importantly, Lady Irwin College is not just a space for academic learning — it is a platform for personal and professional transformation. Through well-equipped laboratories, over 42 hands-on learning spaces, and a rich library of over 57,000 volumes, we cultivate analytical thinking and applied knowledge. Our students engage in internships, research projects, and fieldwork that tackle real challenges in areas such as nutrition analytics, early childhood development, rural innovation, sustainable fashion, and public health.
In today’s age of artificial intelligence and digital acceleration, we recognize that job markets are changing — and so must our preparedness. The college actively supports digital upskilling through interdisciplinary coursework, workshops on emerging themes such as AI and sustainability, and exposure to green technologies, data-led decision-making, and innovation ecosystems. We work closely with Delhi University’s placement and innovation cells to ensure that our students have access to both traditional and future-facing career opportunities — in corporates, civil society, government, and academia alike.
Our NAAC A+ accreditation and consistent national ranking among the top 25 colleges in India affirm our academic excellence. But more than rankings, it is our alumni — leading NGOs, research institutions, ministries, start-ups, and universities — who reflect the strength of the values we in still: of excellence grounded in ethics, innovation tempered by responsibility, and leadership guided by empathy.
To our incoming students, I extend a warm welcome. This is not simply an academic journey — it is a journey into yourself, your potential, and your place in society. You inherit a legacy of women who broke barriers and built bridges. What you choose to do here will shape not just your career, but the communities and causes you will one day serve.
Lady Irwin College is a home for serious scholarship, thoughtful inquiry, and transformative action. We are proud to have you join us — and we look forward to watching you rise.
Welcome to Lady Irwin College.
Warm regards,
