Overview
The postgraduate programme in ‘Textiles and Clothing’ was initiated in the academic year 1987- 88. The revised post graduate curriculum with a change in nomenclature to ‘Fabric and Apparel Science’ was introduced in 2007. The department has evolved and developed over the past three decades, achieving high standards of academic excellence. The programme is suitably supported by a robust curriculum, competent faculty, requisite infrastructure, latest equipment and a well stocked department library. Continuous efforts are made to keep current and the courses have been suitably diversified and re-contextualized keeping pace with the latest developments in the textile and garment industry.
Programme Specific Outcomes
Students of Master’s program in Fabric and Apparel Science, after graduation, will be able to:
- Understand the current processes and trends, new developments and technological changes in the field of textiles and apparel.
- Identify and appreciate the historic textiles and costumes of the world and draw inspiration for the present.
- Apply creative, managerial and technical skills for careers and entrepreneurship in the field of apparel and textiles.
- Understand and apply tools and methods of research and statistics for conducting research in the subject area.
- Apply their knowledge and skills and reach out to the community for their capacity building.

Mission
The Department strives to build a cadre of professionals in the area of Fabric and Apparel Science. The courses are pitched at providing a strong theoretical base along with skill enhancement through hands-on training to provide knowledge of the fundamentals of textiles and apparel sector, while also keeping students abreast with the latest advancements and developments in this sector. The curriculum also aims to sensitize students towards the rich Indian textile heritage, crafts and community. The course curriculum provides strong theoretical foundations as well as experiential training to students for professional and career readiness with the right skill set needed in a competitive market scenario.
Objectives:
- To inculcate a close awareness of the current trends, new developments and technological change in textiles & clothing field.
- To foster appreciation of the tradition and heritage of textiles of the past and draw inspiration for the present.
- To provide depth, scope and professional competency through formal and informal education programmes for continued professional growth.

Distinguished Alumnae
- Ritu Kumar, Internationally renowned fashion designer. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2013.
- Mona Suri was a former Associate Professor at Lady Irwin College for over 2 decades. And subsequently the former Academic Vice President at Royal University for Women, Riffa, Bahrain.
- Toolika Gupta, Director, Indian Institute of Crafts and Design, Jaipur
- Nupur Batra, Founder and Designer of ANANAYA. Working with almost 10 countries and exporting her products to the US, Spain, Japan and a few other countries. They make handbags, earrings, brooches and key rings by creating a space in the world for upcycled things so that they do not need to source raw material.
- Supreeti Garg, Country Manager – India, Pakistan and Bangladesh at Steinhoff International Sourcing and Trading Limited. She has engaged in the garment exports sector for almost a decade.
- Radha Shalini, Former Director, Paul Salon.
- Varsha Gupta has worked as an Associate Professor at NIFT, New Delhi for over 2 decades. She has also worked with various design institutions and export houses.
- Nidhi Datt, has engaged in the garment exports sector for over 2 decades, occupying key leadership position in the organization. Currently, she is the Director of Norwest India, a PDS Multinational Group Co.
- Nidhi Shankar, President Green Linen Pvt Ltd. She is an experienced President with a demonstrated history of working in the textiles industry.
- Rashmi Paliwal, successful entrepreneur. She has received many awards like Mahila Shiromani Award, Mahila Shakti Award, Helen Keller Award, etc. She exports clothing and furnishings to Europe and the US under the brand, ‘Balloons’, which employs a unique method to train the physically and mentally challenged.
- Namrata Dalela, Freelance Textile Conservator. She has worked with textile collections and it’s different aspects in museums; as resource person for workshops, demonstrating and propagating textile conservation practices amongst curators in Museums, etc.
- Anupama Pasricha, Associate Professor and chair of the Department of Apparel, Merchandising and Design, St. Catherine University’s.
- Anuradha Kumra was a former Associate Professor at NIFT Delhi for over 14 years. She has also worked for various design intervention projects for both apparel and home. Currently, she is the Chief of Product – Apparel at Fabindia Overseas Pvt Ltd.
- Charu Jain, Senior Manager – Burberry, Sustainable Manufacturing, Asia Pacific. A passionate sustainability professional who is working towards establishing sustainability as a part of core business strategy.
- Prof Vandana Bhandari, has been an academician for over thirty five years. Dr. Bhandari has worked as an educator, author, administrator with an active social engagement in the fashion and textile sector. She has been a former Professor and Dean, Academics at NIFT Delhi. She currently serves on the Board of Delhi Craft Council, Sadhna- A women’s handicraft enterprise;
- Prof Bhawana Chanana, was a former Associate Professor at Lady Irwin College for over 2 decades. Currently, she is a Professor and Director at the School of Fashion Design & Technology, Amity University Mumbai
- Prof Jyoti Chhabra, was a former Associate Professor at the Institute of Home Economics for over 2 decades. Currently she is the Head, Fashion Design and Coordinator, Research and Innovation Cell for Entrepreneurship at Graphic Era Hill University (GEHU).

Internships
M.Sc. students of Department of Fabric and Apparel Science, Lady Irwin College undergo an internship for a total duration of 4-6 weeks in their chosen area of interest after the Semester II and prior to Semester III. Depending on the interest of the students, the setting may be export houses, buying houses, research organizations, testing labs, museums, conservation organizations, designers and many more.
Institutions/organizations chosen are of good professional standing. The students participate in the on-going activities of the agency/ establishment, acquire skills and knowledge, gather information and prepare a report to be presented in the department after the completion of the placement period.
In the year 2020-2021, the internship programme was designed to give students a wide exposure to various activities conducted in the different departments of the unit like garment printing, digital printing, process of fashion designing, product application and marketing, designing of knitted fabrics and garments, lifestyle products etc.

TRAINING/WORKSHOPS/SEMINARS/CONFRENCES
- The department organized a seminar on Research Thrust Areas on 25th August, 2022 for post graduate students focusing on critical research thrust areas. Addressing an array of topics, the seminar delved into studies encompassing fiber science, dyeing, and printing techniques. It also explored the pivotal role of extension and outreach in developing comprehensive training modules. Sustainability and the adoption of green practices were highlighted as vital components within the discourse, along with a dedicated emphasis on documentation, conservation efforts, and strategies for raising consumer awareness aligned with prevailing market trends. This seminar served as a comprehensive platform to address multifaceted aspects crucial for advancing research and practices within the domain. 25 students attended the seminar.
- The Research Thrust Areas Seminar organized on 12thMay, 2023 was a focused exploration into diverse research domains. Attendees gained valuable insights, delving into key thrust areas shaping contemporary research. Expert presentations and discussions provided a comprehensive overview, enhancing participants’ understanding of pivotal research directions and fostering collaboration in these dynamic fields. It was attended by 17 master’s students.
- 17th International Conference on Apparel and Home Textiles, titled “Path to US $50 Billion Garment Exports: Sustainability and Manufacturing Excellence” in association with Okhla Garment and Textile Cluster, on 24th September, 2022. Industry leaders gathered to discuss strategies for enhancing sustainability and manufacturing excellence in the sector, shaping the future of global garment exports.
- The 18th Sanjam Randhawa Memorial Conference on ‘Sustainability and Circularity in the Textile and Apparel Industry’ held on 16th March, 2023 at FICCI Federation House, was a resounding success. Ms. Darshana Jardosh , Union State Minister of Textiles, was the chief guest for the conference. Participants explored the roadmap to achieving Sustainable Development Goals, fostering insightful discussions and collaborations. The past event significantly contributed to advancing sustainable practices in the industry.
- Personal Grooming Workshop organized on 31st March, 2023 proved instrumental in instilling a sense of self-confidence and refinement. Attendees delved into grooming essentials, learning valuable tips on skincare routines, appropriate attire, and effective communication. The workshop left a lasting impression, equipping participants with the tools for personal and professional success through a polished appearance and demeanor.
- The Wardrobe Styling Workshop, held on 19th April, 2023 was a dynamic exploration of fashion essentials. Participants immersed themselves in hands-on sessions, mastering the art of wardrobe curation. Expert insights on color coordination, outfit pairing, and style trends provided valuable skills for participants, fostering a heightened sense of personal style.
- The Fashion Photography Workshop organized on 24th April, 2023 for M.Sc. students was a dynamic exploration of visual storytelling. Participants, immersed in the art of capturing style and expression, honed their photography skills. Expert guidance on composition, lighting, and fashion aesthetics enriched the students’ understanding, providing them with a comprehensive foundation in the captivating realm of fashion photography.
- A specialized four-day training workshop focusing on hand embroidery skills was conducted for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) candidate. This workshop was geared towards preparing her for participation in the International Abilympics scheduled to take place in France in 2023. The training aimed to enhance their proficiency in hand embroidery techniques, equipping participants with the necessary skills and expertise to compete effectively on an international platform.
- The department in collaboration with OGTC organized 16th International Conference on Apparel and Home textiles (ICAHT, 2021 Virtual Conference) on the theme “Accelerating Competitiveness in Post Covid World” on 12thNovember,2021.
- A training workshop on ‘Soft Skill Development: Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication’ was organized by department on 12th January 2022through google meet as a platform.
- Department of Fabric and Apparel Science conducted a one day Workshop on Stress and Anxiety Management on Wednesday on 19th January, 2022.
- A training workshop on “Resume and cover letter writing” was organized by department on 18th July for Masters programme students.
- A workshop on “Personal Grooming” was organized by the department on 9th march 2022, in which personal grooming and styling techniques were demonstrated by the invited resource person, Ms.Sahman Kaur, Makeup artist at Blush and Glow by Sahman Kaur.

LECTURES BY EMINENT SPEAKERS
- The Systematic Literature Review Lecture organized on 29th May, 2023 was attended by 26 participants and provided a robust platform for in-depth exploration of research methodologies. Attendees gained valuable insights into systematic approaches for synthesizing knowledge. Expert discussions and shared experiences enriched participants’ understanding, empowering them with effective tools for conducting thorough and impactful literature reviews.
- Department of Fabric and Apparel Science organized an Orientation Program for the postgraduate students on 24th December,2021 facilitated with talk by distinguished invited speakers, Dr. Mona Suri, Dr. Charu Jain and Ms. Ananya Bhardwaj.
- A talk by Dr. Rohini Arora on release of her book ‘ Embroidered Narratives of Pahari Embroidery’ organised by TCRC at Dept of FAS, Lady Irwin College.

- A skill development course on Design Thinking in collaboration with Apparel Made-ups & Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council, spanning from September 9th to September 13th, 2022, featured prominent resource persons Mr. Vipul Wahal and Ms. Nidhi Bose. The course commenced with an insightful exploration into the realms of creative thinking, focusing on behaviors that foster creativity, essential business skills, and branding concepts. Engaging group exercises were conducted to reinforce these principles. The workshop ended with brand creation, cultivating a design thinking mindset, prioritizing quantity over quality, memory enhancement techniques, motivation, and the stages and principles of the design thinking process. The course offered a comprehensive understanding of Design Thinking’s core principles and application through an array of interactive sessions and practical insights delivered by industry experts. The event was sponsored by LICAA and 20 participants attended this course.
- A specialized Professional Development Program for non-teaching staff was organized in October 2022, focusing on the intricate world of Traditional Indian Textiles. This program aims to equip participants with comprehensive knowledge about the rich history, diverse techniques, and cultural significance of India’s textile heritage. Through workshops, interactive sessions, and hands-on demonstrations, the program delved into various aspects, including the art of weaving, dyeing methods, historical contexts, and the social, economic, and artistic significance of these textiles. Attendees gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for these traditional crafts, fostering a sense of cultural pride and enhancing their ability to contribute meaningfully to the educational environment.

Special Events
- The Department commemorated National Handloom Day on August 5th, 2022, with vibrant celebrations. Ms. YogitaSingh, an Independent Director from the National Handloom Development Corporation, graced the occasion as the esteemed Chief Guest. The event was marked by engaging activities such as poster making, Hindi slogan writing, and ramp walk on ‘Swadeshi Swag,’ highlighting the richness and significance of indigenous handloom. 134 students attended the event.
- The Diwali Kiosk organized on 17th Oct, 2022 featured digitally crafted products created by BSc Home Science students specializing in Computer-Aided Designing for Fashion. The innovative collection showcased a blend of traditional Diwali elements and modern design techniques, offering unique and stylish items that reflected the students’ creative talent at the intersection of technology and fashion
- The Department successfully organized an event “Trashion” on 27th February, 2023 at Seth Ram Hall, Lady Irwin College, urging participants to create garments from unconventional materials, promoting sustainability while igniting creativity. Participants showcased their ingenuity by crafting elegant evening wear from discarded items, turning trash into high-fashion treasures. These events not only celebrated eco-conscious design but also cultivated a sense of innovation within our community.
- The Styling Contest, featuring two dynamic rounds, unfolded successfully on 28th February, 2023. The Saree Style Expedition showcased participants’ creativity in saree styling, while the Accessory Adventure added an extra layer of excitement as contestants explored innovative accessory combinations. The past event celebrated diverse styles and fashion prowess in a spirited competition.
- The Department celebrated Earth Day 2023 in association with the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. The series of events included a plantation drive, slogan writing contest, Samwaad, a conversation on planet Earth. The event witnessed active engagement from both students and faculty members, reflecting a collective commitment to environmental awareness and action.

Field Trips
- The department organized educational trip to Jaipur on 30thJanuary, 2023. The trip focused on natural dyeing and block printing. Students visited dyeing and printing units, gaining firsthand experience of traditional craftsmanship. Additionally, they explored the City Palace, marveling at its collection of historic costumes. This trip enriched students’ understanding of textiles and heritage, reflecting our commitment to holistic learning experiences.
- Educational visit to Surajkund Mela on 10thFebruary, 2023 was organized, 58 students participated and delved into the kaleidoscope of Indian textiles. From intricate weaves to vibrant embroidery, the exposure enhanced their appreciation for the rich tapestry of traditional craftsmanship. Engaging with skilled artisans provided a firsthand understanding of the intricate processes behind the creation of diverse textile masterpieces.
- The department had planned an educational visit to Liva Studio, Noida on 17th May,2022. The visit was planned in response to the invite received from LivaStudio to attend their First customer meet of FY23 with ‘ SS23 Trend presentation cum Seasonal Collection’.
- A Visit to Centre of Excellence (AMHSSC)was planned to introduce students to the Apparel made ups and home furnishing sector.
Internships
- The internship programme is designed to give students wide exposure to various activities conducted in the different departments of the unit like garment printing, digital printing, the process of fashion designing, product application and marketing, designing of knitted fabrics and garments, lifestyle products etc.
M.Sc. students of the Department of Fabric and Apparel Science, Lady Irwin College undergo an internship for a total duration of 4-6 weeks in their chosen area of interest after Semester II and before Semester III. Depending on the interest of the students, the internship may be at export houses, buying houses, research organizations, testing labs, museums, conservation organizations, fashion and textile designers etc.
Institutions/organizations chosen are of good professional standing. The students participate in the ongoing activities of the agency/ establishment, acquire skills and knowledge, gather information and prepare a report to be presented in the department after the completion of the placement period.
