The Rajkumari Amrit Kaur Child Study Centre (RAKCSC) has been an integral part of the Department of Human Development and Childhood studies (HDCS), Lady Irwin College. The Centre functions as a laboratory setting for students of the College. The objectives of the Centre have been to provide development centric care and education to children in the age group of 6 months to 12 years, to create a model inclusive environment for early childhood care and education, and to provide a research and practice laboratory setting for students and research scholars.
*Currently, following the Covid-19 protocol, the Centre is conducting morning program for children between 2 to 4 years, in online mode. The program is inclusive and parents are also involved, as well as additional Individualized Education Program (IEP) support is extended to parents of children with special needs after the session.

SETU aims to provide services to children at risk as early as possible. Early identification and remediation of developmental difficulties is vital for allowing children to develop to their full potential with minimum effort, and for providing timely support and guidance to families.
‘Samvad’, the school magazine is published twice a year. - Children participated in the Ability Utsav organised by Institute for Special Education, YMCA Nizamuddin Centre, New Delhi. The fashion show put up by the children of RAKCSC won the second prize. Children also participated in a painting competition there and received certificates for the same.
- Our team of little sportspersons participated in the Bocce event at the Delhi State Mega Games 2012 organized by Special Olympics Bharat, Delhi. The young athletes won gold medals and bronze medals. Parents were invited for a prize and certificate distribution ceremony organized at the Centre.
- Thirteen paintings by our budding artists were selected for an exhibition organized by Samadhan, an NGO working with children with special needs. They were on display at the India International Centre. Radha Mahajan received a consolation prize of Rs 1000/- for her painting titled ‘Nature: My best friend’ in the exhibition.
- Umesh Dutta and Anirudh Mishra received certificates of participation at the art competition organized by Very Special Arts, India
- Three of our children with special needs went to YMCA Ability Utsav on 17th November 2011 and participated in dance and painting competition. Pragati Aggarwala,a four year old from Saryu group won the first prize in the dance competition for performing on a Nepali folksong. Both Mohd. Kaif from Sangam group and Arnav Gupta from Saryu group got participation certificate for dancing and painting respectively.Congratulations and keep it up … you will inspire many.
- RAKCSC team won the gold medal at the “Bocce Game” organized by Special Olympics, Bharat.
- Dhriti Sharma and Anshit Gupta won consolation prizes for painting in the category of Cerebral Palsy and Hearing Impaired children respectively in a competition organized by Very Special Arts, Delhi
- Shashwat Sharma, a child from Nursery Group, won second prize in the cycling zonal games 2007 organised by Special Olympics Bharat – Delhi.
- Nikita Narang, another child with special needs, stood fourth in the soft ball throw event in the Delhi Women Championship 2007organised by Special Olympics Bharat – Delhi.
- Krishna Rajput and Shashwat Sharma won 1st prize in the respective categories in a painting competition at Sadhu Wasvani International School. The prize winning paintings appeared as the cover of Samvad, the School magazine/
- An exhibition of painting by budding artists of the After School Care programme was held on April 30, 2004. Appreciation of the paintings and the exhibition was featured in the Hindustan Times.
- Fusih ur Rehman won two gold medals, one in 100 metre Assist Walk and the second in Soft Ball Throw event in The Athletic State Games 2005 organised by Special Olympics Committee, Delhi

- The 5th Community Outreach event titled ‘Diwali Haat’ was combined with the Children’s Day celebrations held on 14th November, 2012. The morning hour of the day were dedicated to providing fun to the children. Parents were invited at 11.30 am to witnessed the fashion show which had won the children the second prize at an interschool event. Post 12 noon, the event was thrown open to the public where they were able to shop for a cause at the ‘Diwali Haat’. Twelve institutions and individuals put up their stalls to exhibit and sell articles prepared by persons with disabilities. The stalls were also manned by persons with disability providing them opportunities to interact with and understand the nuances of sale and purchase in a supported environment.Â
 - The 4th Community Outreach event titled ‘Swavalamban: Ek Anokha Bazaar’ was held on 17th December, 2011. Dr Himanshu Das, Expert Member and Senior Inspector with the Rehabilitation Council of India inaugurated the event. The purpose of the event was to generate awareness and sensitivity in the community about the need to empower people with disabilities and those from underprivileged groups, opportunities available in the area of rehabilitation, and to encourage them to participate in society productively by providing platforms to showcase their abilities and strengths. With this objective in mind, twenty institutions had put up their stalls to exhibit and sell articles prepared by persons with disabilities and those from disadvantaged groups. The event was sponsored by NTPC and The Central Bank of India and attended by two hundred people.
Doordarshan covered Swavalamban in a 20 minute documentary for promotional purposes to sensitize people to the potential of people with disabilities and need to make them self reliant.

- Parvarish, the 3rd Community Outreach event was heldon 22nd January 2011. It was with the objective of addressing issues related to parenting and wellbeing of children, with a special focus on care and education of children with special needs. Experts from the fields of nutrition, health and safety, emotional and social wellbeing, and education were invited to address parents’ queries. ‘Daddy Cool’, an interactive event for ‘father-child’ teams was planned specially for fathers to highlight their role in parenting.
- Kilkari, a flexi-time programme for toddlers (6 months – 2 years) accompanied by a care giver, and Remedial classes for children with special needs (3 – 8 years) referred by formal schools have been two new additions to the programme.
- Suno-suno, the 2nd Community Outreach event was organized on 18th December 2009. The focus of the event was to sensitise the youth towards the needs of persons with disability and their families.Â
- Involvement of the parents of children attending SETU, The Early Intervention Unit, in activities of the Centre lead to the formation of Parent Support group which was formally named SETU Shakti.
- First batch of students from Institute for Physically Handicapped, Delhi were placed at the Centre for internship.
- A new initiative of Systematic Early Training Unit (SETU) is the Information and Communication Unit (ICU). The major foci of this unit are dissemination of information and generating awareness about various disabilities and issues concerning persons with disabilities. To achieve this objective informative articles and write-ups are being put up on the notice board regularly.
- List of special schools, compiled zone-wise for Delhi, and also for outstation facilities for children with special needs has been very useful in guiding parents.
- Teacher Training extended to young adults with special needs. One student undergoing training at Sri Ram School Vocational Training programme was placed for internship at the Centre.
- Four sets of Activity Manuals developed at the Centre by the teachers – ‘Let’s Start’, ‘Fun with Numbers’, ‘Let’s Learn A B C’, and ‘Aao Seekhen K, Kha, Ga’ Teachers are maintaining record of their experiences with a focus on preparing guidelines for usage by other professionals and caregivers.
- Saksham, the 1st Community Outreach event for families and persons with disability was organised to provide a common platform for interaction with experts from related fields in November 2008. It was covered in the Hindustan Times and telecast on Door Darshan
- A write up about the Centre appeared in ‘Preschool Guide for parents’ and ‘Education Times’ published by India Today publishing group
- A write up about the Centre appeared in ‘Focus on Children under Six (FOCUS) Report’, a publication on various programmes being run by governmental and non governmental agencies for preschool children.
- A widely circulated Hindi magazine ‘Sarita’ featured an article about SETU, the Systematic Early Training Unit at RAKCSC.
- Miditech Pvt. Ltd. Producer of ‘Galli Galii Sim Sim’, a 30 minute programme for preschool children shot film footage of children involved in various physical activities for their series “Keep fit”.

- SETU- Systematic Early Training Unit launched on November 11 to provide early intervention to infants at risk and young children with disability. The programme was inaugurated by Ms. Gursharan Kaur, wife of the Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh, and an ex-grandparent of the Centre. Dr. Kiran Bedi, also an ex-parent, was invited as the Guest of Honour.
- “Unfolding- The story of an Early Childhood Development Programme” a 20- minute film documenting the evolution of the Centre from its inception in 1955 to its diverse activities at present produced
- ‘Sunehra Safar’, a 2-day Interschool Children’s Workshop focusing on creative arts as a means of recreation and learning for children with varying ability levels was organized with the objective of networking and generating awareness in the community towards inclusive education.
- ‘Swarnim Lamhe’, a cultural evening was organized wherein the alumnae and staff of the Centre had an opportunity to interact with each other. Scintillating musical performance by Euphoria, a popular band and fashion show by the RAKCSC students were the highlights of the evening.Â
